Gifts
of Healing
Bro. Michael Jacob
"To another the
gifts of healing by the same spirit"(I Cor12:9)
From the short statement by
Paul, it is implied that it is a multiple gift; in other words, it consists of a
number of gifts. These several gifts of healing are not intended to be divided up among a
number of persons. The scripture does not say "To one is given gifts of
Healing the deaf; to another the dumb; to another the blind" No. The healing gifts
are designed to function through one individual and the success of exercising these gifts
depends on the minister of God who should be in prayer and fasting before exercising these
gifts.
Are the gifts of healing
intended to heal anybody, anytime? The scriptures contradict such a view. Because of
this misunderstanding, believers are sometimes disheartened. In Christ's own city of
Nazareth, it is said: "And He could there do no mighty work, save that He laid
His hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them" (Mark 6:5)
Christ did no mighty work
because there were certain conditions for Healing. Gifts of Healing require the
cooperation and faith of the sick person. They should accept Christ as their Lord and
Saviour before praying for Healing. Those who minister the gifts of healing should have
the authority in Christ's Name which comes by intense prayer and fasting.
"And many lepers were in
Israel at the time of Eliesus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman
the Syrian" Luke 4:27 These words clearly implies that the gifts of healing are not
for indiscriminate healing, but that there are important conditions to be met first. All
sickness can be healed, but not all sick people can be healed. There were many sick
people around the pool of Bethesda but Jesus healed only one, the 38 year old impotent
man. Also understand the gifts of Healing will only be manifest for the Glory of God.
