    Speaking In Tongues

BIBLE TEXT: 1 Cor 14:18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

MEANING: Miraculously speaking by the power of the Spirit a language which you have never learned.

CENTRAL TRUTH: SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS A MEANS WHEREBY THE BELIEVER MAY RELEASE GREAT POWER!

TONGUES IS THE EVIDENCE OF THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY GHOST

Acts 2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Acts 2:11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"

Acts 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.

Acts 10:45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.

Acts 10:46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,

Acts 19:6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

TONGUES MAY BE FREELY USED IN PRAYER AND PRAISE

1 Cor 14:5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

Rom 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

1 Cor 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

1 Cor 14:15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.

1 Cor 14:18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

TONGUES IS NOT A MESAGE FOR THE ENTIRE CHURCH , AND SHOULD BE RESERVED FOR PERSONAL PRAYER

1 Cor 14:2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.

1 Cor 14:4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

1 Cor 14:6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

1 Cor 14:11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me.

1 Cor 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

TONGUES IS NOT TO BE USED IN PUBLIC PREACHING, TESTIFYING OF EXHORTATION.

1 Cor 14:18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. (In the Personal Prayer)

1 Cor 14:19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

1 Cor 14:22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. (Acts 2:6 to 12, When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?")

1 Cor 14:23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

TONGUES MUST NEVER BE FORBIDDEN

1 Cor 14:2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.

1 Cor 14:4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

1 Cor 14:13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.

1 Cor 14:18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

1 Cor 14:39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

THE BENEFITS FOR ALL WHO SPEAK IN TONGUES

Isa 28:11 & 12, Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people, to whom he said, = 1 Cor 14:21 In the law it is written: "With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me," says the Lord. {God speaking to his people, so who we are to speak against it. In Joel 2:28 "And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. Joel 2:29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.}

"This is the resting place, let the weary rest"; and,

"This is the place of repose (refreshing)" but they would not listen

1 Cor 14:2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. {Here we speak to God in tongues mysteries that others make not understand it.}

1 Cor 14:4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, {We got edified by this tongues. Then why not use it like Apostle Paul? In 1 Cor 14:18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;} In Mark 16:17 "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name (Jesus) they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;

1 Cor 14:5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. In 1 Cor 14:13 Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

1 Cor 14:22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe. In (Acts 2:6 to 12, When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?") In Acts 2:16 "But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:, and then Peter gave them the word of God in Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 2:41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

TONGUES ARE NEEDED FOR OUR PERSONAL AND THE CHURCH GROWTH

1 Cor 14:4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, {We got edified by this tongues. Then why not use it like Apostle Paul? In 1 Cor 14:18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;} In Mark 16:17 "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name (Jesus) they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; {If you are a believer but not speaking in tongues you can not edify yourself}

I Cor 14:5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. In 1 Cor 14:13 Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. Since we are not praying to understand the gift of God and Interpret it prophesy is now looks better than Speaking in tongues. When you prophesy the Church is getting edified. But when you speak in tongues and Interpret You also got edified and the church also got edified.

1 Cor 14:22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe. In (Acts 2:6 to 12, Three thousand new people were added to the church by this sign on the day of Pentecost. In Acts 2:41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

1 Cor 14:27 & 28, If anyone speaks in a tongue, two or at the most three should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.
